Toshiba launches SmartMCD series gate drive ICs with embedded microcontrollers
Wednesday,April 3,2024

Toshiba Electronic Components and Storage Devices Co., Ltd. ("Toshiba") announced today that it has begun mass shipping SmartMCD series gate drive ICs with embedded microcontrollers (MCUs). The first product "TB9M003FG" is suitable for equipment such as water pumps, oil pumps, fans, and blowers used in automotive applications with sensorless control of 3-phase DC brushless motors.

TB9M003FG integrates the microcontroller (Arm Cortex-M0), flash memory, power control function, and communication interface function into the gate drive IC to control and drive the N-channel power MOSFET in a three-phase brushless DC motor. This integration will reduce system size and number of components, while achieving advanced and complex motor control in various automotive motor applications. In addition, the new product is equipped with Toshiba's self-developed vector engine and hardware for insensitive sine wave control, which not only reduces the load on microcontrollers but also reduces the size of software code.
The reference design "Automotive Body Electronic Motor Drive Circuit Using SmartMCD?" based on TB9M003FG has been launched on Toshiba's official website.
The expansion of the electric vehicle (xEV) market has brought about market demand for electrification, component integration, miniaturization of electronic control units (ECU), and low-noise motors. To meet this demand, the new product integrates microcontrollers into gate drive ICs to help reduce the size of ECU components and make the motor quieter by using vector control.
